Pediatric gastrointestinal impairment refers to a range of disorders that can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the esophagus and stomach to the small intestine, colon and rectum.
Common GI disorders that cause impairment include: gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), acute or chronic diarrhea, constipation and cow or soy milk allergy/intolerance. Although it can be concerning,
in many cases, the symptoms associated with these disorders can be managed with nutritional therapy alone, for example in the case of GERD.
The GI tract is responsible for the digestion of the food we eat. When children suffer from GI impairment, there is often a risk for malabsorption or maldigestion, which may lead to nutritional deficiencies.
It is for this reason that a specific focus is placed on the nutritional status of these children, as optimum nutrient intake has been shown to support normal growth and development as well as improve
